Green Card Advice! If you have gone through the process through marriage please help.?
I am a U.S. citizen and my boyfriend is from South Africa. We plan to get engaged this summer and married possibly next year. He has a student visa that expires in May of next year. I know you cant apply for a green card through marriage until you are already married but his student visa will expire before we get married. Has anyone been through this and can give some advice? I want to hear from people who have actually gone through this!

If he’s going to graduate before you get married then what you should do is have a quiet civil wedding at the courthouse BEFORE graduation. File all the immigration paperwork for an adjustment of status.

It is a process. When you have to justify yourself and your relationship to others, it is never completely pleasant, but the government representatives try to make you as comfortable as possible during interviews.

Why would it take over 3 yrs to get a Green Card through marriage?
My friend has been married to this guy for a little over 3 yrs now. Just recently, they hired an immigration attorney to get things going on his Green Card. Why so long? Is that normal?

I guess you would have to ask her why she took 3 years to hire an immigration lawyer. The only answer to the question would be found in the paperwork.

I was getting cash and food stamps for my child who is US citizen.
Now I am engaged with a guy who is US citizen also and we are planning to get married and I am concerned about the fact that I was getting cash and food stamps ONLY for my child in the past. Is that going to affect somehow the process of getting green card for me in the future.
Dan Richardson answers:
This will be evaluated by USCIS as a part of their processing of your application. Since all the money and food stamps went to a US citizen, you may still be able to adjust status.
